After years of rumors, Splenda has been officially linked to leukemia. Research done by Italy’s Ramazzini Institute found that sucralose, the active ingredient in Splenda, raised the risk of blood cancers.
“These findings do not support previous data that sucralose is biologically inert. More studies are necessary to show the safety of sucralose, including new and more adequate carcinogenic bioassay on rats. Considering that millions of people are likely exposed, follow-up studies are urgent,” researchers stated in their study published in the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health.
Once again consumers have been sent messages that were meant to confuse by those profiting from a poison. Meanwhile, real science shows us that a poison has been sold for profit. In 2013 Splenda’s safety was downgraded from “safe” to “caution” by the Center for Science in the Public Interest following the sweetener’s link to cancer for the first time. The latest findings have prompted the food safety and nutrition watchdog group to issue another safety downgrade from “caution” to “avoid”.
“We recommend that consumers avoid sucralose, or Splenda, and we recommend consumers also avoid saccharin, aspartame, and acesulfame potassium,” CSPI president Michael F. Jacobson said in a recent statement.
While it can be argued that the risk of cancers from sucralose is less that the dangers caused by a high sugar intake such as obesity, the bottom line is that artificial sweeteners should be avoided, as should excessive amounts of natural sugar. According to the American Health Association, men can safely consume 150 calories per day (37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons) while women have the bar set at 100 calories per day (25 grams or 6 teaspoons).
To live a healthy life, you want to have a sweet soul, but while a sweet tooth is great to satisfy for an occasional indulgence, it is better to seek naturally sweet when we want to please our palette.
